A cooker hood is an indispensable appliance of a modern kitchen.
Today, for the reasons of technological progress and the fact that apartments become more and more airtight, you need to install a cooker hood.

A cooker hood is not a product you buy for one season but for many years. A good choice of hood will delight both its users and their guests.
A cooker hood can become the most prominent element of our kitchen so it is worth getting some more information about it.


THE MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION – cooker hood parameters!

Sound volume – you should pay attention to the level of noise generated by the cooker hood. Naturally, for your comfort, the appliance should be as quiet as possible. Therefore, you should check how it works at different speeds of operation. Remember that the top speed should be used only a few times a year, for example when you cook a festive feast. This parameter is specified in decibels (dB). You should definitely avoid cooker hoods made in China or by manufacturers who install in their hoods “jet” blowers without any calculations, exposing their customers to unnecessary noise and too high electric bills! A bigger turbine needs more power regardless of what gear it works on. It is applicable only in specially designed high-end hoods.

Capacity is measured in cubic meters per hour. The value specified by the manufacturer usually represents the maximum possible capacity reached on the top gear. A common value is 400 m3/h. The higher the capacity, the faster the polluted air is sucked outside or filtered. But remember that a higher value means a higher energy consumption. The hoods without the capacity and the air flow calculated are like a Skatebord with a Ferrari engine – no use value.


Lighting – as the hoods are mounted above the hob, they need to have lighting. The majority of manufacturers use traditional or halogen bulbs. Halogen lamps emit stronger light but they also have many drawbacks, such as high energy consumption, short life or the risk of burns. The recent years provided us with a new technology – LED lighting which is currently the best solution (low energy consumption, long life, pleasant design, no heating up).

Dimensions – make sure that the cooker hood you have chosen fits in the space planned for it. You should also ensure that its size is not smaller than that of your hob.

Filters – pay attention to the filters installed in the hood. There are two basic types of filters:

    * Grease filters – as the name suggests, their job is to absorb grease particles floating in the air when you are cooking. In modern cooker hoods, the filter takes the form of several layers of a metal, very close mesh. Its advantage is the incredible efficiency and no need for replacements. Just wash it in hot water every few months.

    * Carbon filters – their job is to absorb odors from the air, so they are used mainly in hoods working in a closed circulation mode. Their life and quality depends on the particular model. They should be replaced according to their parameters.

You should also check the filters of the cooker hood you want to buy and calculate their annual exploitation costs.


Control – a question of taste and price. Depending on the hood type, it may have built-in mechanical control, in which case you control it using the buttons, or electronic control with a touch screen. The latter often has additional features such as the ability of being programmed so that it can turn off automatically or change the capacity. Nowadays, an electronically controlled hood should also have a REMOTE CONTROL!

1. What types of cooker hoods are there?
Cooker hoods can be divided into two types which are closely related to the system in which the appliance works::

    * a closed circulation system – filter/absorber – consists in filtering the sucked in air through the system of filters which remove unwanted substances and odors. Then, the cleaned air is blown back into the room.

    * * an open ducted system – extractor – the polluted air is removed completely outside of the building. Choosing this solution, you should pay attention to the diameter of the hood’s outlet so that it fits into the inlet of the ventilation duct. In case of mismatch, you can use one of the many adapters available on the market.

When deciding which type of cooker hood is more suitable for you, you should consider the room in which it will be installed. Extractors are connected to a separate air duct, therefore, they can only be installed in the kitchens which have it. On the other hand, filters do not require any additional architecture elements, but their characteristic feature is lower efficiency and the need for periodic replacements.

It is worth noting that most of the cooker hoods can operate in both modes, but you should check this before making a purchase.


2.What are the differences in the structure of cooker hoods?
There are several types of hoods. The choice depends on the amount of space you have in your kitchen and your own preferences:
    * an under-cabinet cooker hood is one of the most popular solutions. It is mounted under a cabinet above the stove.
    * a chimney cooker hood is mounted directly on the wall, there are also versions for mounting in a corner. It is usually installed between kitchen cabinets and connected to the ventilation duct through a pipe hidden in the chimney.
    * an island cooker hood is used primarily in kitchens with an island. They are attached directly to the ceiling above the hob. The aesthetic value of this solution is important. Such a hood has a significant impact on the look of the room.
Under-cabinet cooker hoods are the cheapest ones due to their structure. For chimney cooker hoods you will pay a little more. The most expensive ones are island cooker hoods due to their size and specific design. Of course, there are hoods of every type at different price levels.


3. How high should a cooker hood be mounted?
When installing the hood you must make sure it is mounted at the appropriate height. The recommended distance between the hood and the hob is between 70 and 85 cm. It is connected to air circulation – the correct distance will ensure effective collection of all contaminants. You should also make sure that the hood does not obstruct your movements around the stove.


There are always cheaper options.. ..but will their quality be high enough? Remember that price always goes hand in hand with quality and parameters.
